Minas, Uruguay , 2 hours by bus NE of Montevideo is the REAL Uruguayan countryside. You can hike the mountains, swim the rivers/walerfall, ride a horse, or just enjoy sitting around the historic plaza and practicing Spanish, with the local gauchos. ( and they can teach you to ride a horse ) My house is the old Spanish Style , with high ceilings, rooftop garden, tiled floors, big breezy window/doors, with fireplaces throughout. I include a vegan breakfast, usually waffles and homefried potatos. People from all over the world stay here, as i used to be a hostel.
