Montana passed legalization for medical cannabis in 2004, however the Montana Medical Marijuana Act lacked a regulatory structure and was effectively repealed in 2011 by SB423, Montana Marijuana Act. 

Residents of Montana can now apply for a medical marijuana card on either a patient or a caregiver status. They have to have been referred by a registered healthcare physician.

Patients and caregivers who qualify for a card can grow up to six medical marijuana plants under the new legalization, they can also possess up to one ounce of cannabis. Providers have to register with the state of Montana.
