It all started in California when you think about it. California was the first state to legalize the use of medicinal weed. Then California fell behind the times a little, as other states have gone ahead and also seen the light in terms of making recreational marijuana legal. Well, it seems that California is getting back into the game.

After months and months of negotiations and talks, and more negotiations and talks, it looks like this November it is finally on the cards: the legalization measure is headed towards the November ballot. About time, right?

So how did it all go down so far? Well, a couple of weeks back, there was an executive board meeting in Long Beach. It was here that the Democrats opted to bring forward the cannabis proposal, and they did so after listening to a speech from the proposal’s biggest supporter.

That was Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom—and this guy is the most popular candidate lined up to take over from Brown as governor in 2019.

And the concerns?

Because there are concerns, that’s for sure. The good news is that they are getting less, and they are being addressed. This is an example from Barbara Boxer, who is a democratic candidate.

“There’s just one issue that’s a serious one I am looking at, which is worrisome from Colorado and Washington state where they have seen … driver fatalities go up,” Boxer said. “But, there is something in the initiative that does address it. So, I am hoping that I’ll be able to support it this time.”

There was an incident last month in which two fatalities occurred when a teen driver hit a stationary car at a red light. The two passengers died, and the issue of driving under the influence of marijuana was highlighted. This, however, is something that we can all do our part to control. If we can consume responsibly, and not drive under the influence of weed, then there will be no worries on that front from policy setters.
