Can foreigners buy Cannabis in Uruguay?

Personal use of cannabis has been decriminalised in Uruguay since 1974. What is illegal is selling.

Visitors cannot buy cannabis in Uruguay. That’s something that you really need to know before you take a marijuana vacation there. Residents can buy weed but the rules at the moment are that you have to be Uruguayan or a resident.

The good news is that Uruguayans and residents are uber-friendly and are known to offer non-residents and visitors their home-grown weed. Also, if you want to go on a cannabis tour then they are available. So Uruguay is certainly worth a visit if you are interested in knowing more about the cannabis scene there.

Uruguay Cannabis Rules

Uruguayan citizens and registered residents who have been living in Uruguay for at least two years are allowed to purchase up to 40 grams of cannabis per month from the pharmacy.

In order to do so, residents who want to buy weed have to register with the pharmacy and the information gets put into a central database. This is so that residents can be monitored and the pharmacy. They can also determine if people are selling cannabis and not consuming it.

However, if you are given cannabis as a gift, you are able to consume it. This is why Bud and Breakfast vacation rentals are important here, because if you stay with a host who has a private stash. Any household that registered to grow weed is allowed to grow up to six plants. Groups of between fifteen and forty-five people can join together to form a “Club de Cannabis” and this enables them to grow up to 99 plants

If you are over 18 years old you can smoke cannabis in private property — but not on public property.
